Jackson, WY

We are back! Jackson, WY proved to not only be a place we loved, but a place we couldn't wait to go back too. Our initial "plans" included a tri-resort trip up to Canada but as we have been humbled to find out, the best laid plans often go awry. Due to the extreme temperatures and lack of sufficient snow in Canada, we decided to detour to a place we knew had been getting more than it's fair share of snow fall. So here we are, night one, at Fireside Resort. Plugged in, heated up, happy, and ready for a good day of skiing tomorrow.

We spent our first full day skiing. The weather could not have been better. Because it was New Years Eve day it was quite busy. But, it was still incredibly fun. I spent a better part of the morning tussling with my ski boots but finally found my groove in the afternoon. Despite our vow to NOT buy beer at the ski resorts, we broke down and enjoyed a few at the top of the mountain on a sunny restaurant patio.

New Years Eve brought exhaustion from the day and and early evening. Despite our attempts to stay up and enjoy the local Jackson culture we couldn't sustain. We were asleep before the ball dropped. We decided not to ski the next day to avoid the multitudes of people we saw on the mountain the day prior. We also had to move from our comfy, heated, home out of our campsite. We gravitated towards the Forest Service land we had explored this summer. Despite Stuarts constant caution, I decided to drive down an unplowed forest service road. Well, you guessed it, we got stuck. BUT only momentarily! Using the multitudes of tricks I knew from my childhood winters I was able to get us unstuck (with Stuart's help of course!).

We camped that night at the trailhead of the forest service road. I don't think either of us has experienced a colder evening. By our calculations the temperatures dropped to below 0 and with our faulty propane heater we mine as well should have been sleeping outside. Cliff hanger, we survived. But, not without a detailed list of things we needed to do to avoid being that cold again.

The next day brought car heat, sunshine, and a trip to ACE hardware. We decided it was time to move on from Jackson. We wanted to save our last ski day there for better snow and diminished crowds. Our choices, head north to Bozeman or back to Salt Lake. Without even having to flip a coin, we decided to go to Salt Lake. We knew we could regroup there, fix up Ruby, and wait comfortably for snow.

We drove slow and spent one night at the top of Logan Pass, looking out over Bear Lake. With warmer temperatures, a fixed propane heater, and a Super Moon, we enjoyed the evening and after a relaxed morning we drove the last few hours to Salt Lake.

p.s. Be patient with us, we are trying to get better at taking pictures!

South Dakota

South Dakota! I only have pictures of Stuart for this one (see Adeventure pg). Once again I was negligent in documenting the adventure. But pheasants, fields, deep cattails, and beautiful sunsets. Sorry I only show one of the four!

The Eclipse

The most exciting adventure yet. This could be considered Ruby's true maiden voyage. Getting to Salt Lake was one thing, but being out on the road on an adventure is a whole other animal.

The road led us to Jackson, Wyoming, for the 2017 Eclipse. The hype was large. We were set for something beyond what we were expecting to get. Finding a campsite with old Rube's was a daunting task. Even a few days before the celestial event of the decade, we had to put a few dings in the old girl before we could find our own little spot tucked back in the cow-ridden, forest land of Jackson. In some ways it was comforting to have so many domestic animals around. Despite my continuing efforts, I have yet to pet a "wild" cow.

The days were filled with hammock laying, beer drinking, forest road driving fun. We were able to procure a spot for the eclipse up on a ridge line overlooking the wide expanse of the Tetons. There are truly no words to explain the Eclipse. Hours before we prepared ourselves for a let down, but after witnessing the full eclipse, we were truly speechless. Needless to say, when it goes almost completely dark at 10:00 AM for 2 minutes, its an incredibly amazing experience. It got cold, the horizon all the way around us looked like a 360 degree sunset. It was amazing! And yes, I did get a picture with my eclipse glasses over my camera lens, despite many websites saying that would not be possible.

This was an amazing first trip. I finally was back in my element, the west. I think I derive a lot of energy and strength from the mountains. There is something about going down public land roads and finding places that I have never been before that is truly exhilarating. There is also something to be said for the amazing views, the amazing people, and (lucky us) the amazing weather. Top 5 adventure, easy.

As I head forward on the road, I worry daily about gas money and where I'm going to sleep. But, every night of this voyage, I was fed, happy, and asleep in a beautiful, new, and exciting place.

Summer in SLC

I'm back in the Salt Lake. Not sure what I'm searching for here. I am just passing through.

It is HOT here! I forgot how much of a scorcher it can be. Also, lakes. I take so much advantage of the wonderful greenery and water around me in Minnesota. It is so dry here.

What am I looking for here?

Getting Ready to Go

Here she is! All ready for her maiden voyage out west. I decided against the blue stripe on top of the red bottom. I think the small accents of blue in the propane tank and eventually (even though not pictured here) on the cover of the front window add the blue touch I was looking for. I also made the stove blue which gives me some happy vibes and color within the camper.

After my Dad finished painting her I was hesitant about the red. It seemed so bright and flashy. My car is already a modge podge of different colors (red body, black tires, dark green topper) so I was worried adding more color would be overwhelming, even if it was the same color of my truck. But, when I put the two together it looked great. I definitely stand out, but that seems to be my theme in life.
